My family and I went to Peru over spring break for Frances and Steven’s wedding (you may remember them from the Los Altos studio). I highly recommend!
While we were there, we visited the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, and I’ve never been so grateful for all of the functional and strength training we do at Alkalign! You very quickly realize that there’s no ADA there; if you want to visit ancient ruins and hike to the top of Machu Picchu, you have to be mobile and in good shape.
I intentionally took a week off of my regular training plan to let my body and brain relax. Despite the very active trip, I returned feeling refreshed and excited to get back to my mat and my Alkalign peeps. I also noticed I felt really strong in my workouts.
This trip was a great reminder of how important strength is, and how important recovery is to forward progress—physically and mentally!
As much as I love to take my bands when I travel, I also want to encourage you to take time off from your normal routine once in a while. The more you consistently train when you’re at home, the more you need a recovery week every 10 weeks or so.
Rest days allow muscles to repair and grow stronger while preventing overuse injuries and burnout. Continuous training without adequate recovery can lead to fatigue, decreased strength, and even hormonal imbalances. Additionally, rest periods help maintain motivation and long-term consistency, ensuring sustainable progress in strength and fitness.
Gentle consistency is key and enjoying your vacation without the pressure of training helps to restore and rejuvenate your body and soul.
