Marlene Thompson – Overcoming an Injury & Alkaligning On!

by | Feb 24, 2022

I always say exercise isn’t something you HAVE to do. It’s something you GET to do. Before I discovered Alkalign, I always pushed through the pain and thought I was invincible. I have an active lifestyle and would run a half marathon in the freezing cold temps of Northern Michigan, play 12 games of beach volleyball in 90+ degree temps and keep going even though I was hurting/freezing/overheated.

Alkalign came into my life at a time when I thought my aches and pains were all part of the aging process because of the activities I engaged in. Through Alkalign I learned this was a complete myth and that age is just a number; mobility doesn’t have to retire once you hit 40. Alkalign’s method of strength training without pain went against everything I had been taught and for years I have enjoyed the friendships, movement and mindset that Alkalign represents.

In the summer of 2021 I discovered that Alkalign means more to me than I could have possibly imagined. During a pickleball match, approximately 4 points after my inner Alkalign voice said “get off the court and stretch your calves,” I suffered a full achilles tendon rupture. My whole life changed in that instant of not listening to my body, even though I knew better.

One of Alkalign’s many teachings is that your feet are your foundation; align your feet, align your life. Now I no longer had the function of my right foot, I was missing 50% of my physical foundation and I was facing a LONG recovery ahead of me. I was about to learn the most important lesson; Alkalign is the foundation.

The day after my injury, I was taking an Alkalign class. I took 2 weeks off post-surgery, but I continued my classes afterward to maintain strength in the rest of my body, to increase circulation to assist in healing and to feel supported by my Blue Crew tribe. Having people who will ‘walk’ challenging times in life with you is something I firmly believe everyone deserves. My body failed me, but Alkalign kept me strong, sane and moving. This is what makes Alkalign more than a workout. It’s a mindset that carries your through your darkest physical and mental times.

I teach Alkalign because it is the foundation of every season of your body and life. Pregnant, injured, cross-training, depressed, in a slump, feeling amazing and want to share that feeling with your tribe? Alkalign is the answer. As your Alkalign instructor, meeting you where you are and helping you feel confident in your body, no matter what season it is in, is my privilege. Alkalign is for every body and anybody who is ready to make a change.

It Doesn't Have to Hurt to Work

A NEW, 2-week FREE program we are offering to any and all who want to get off the hamster wheel and try something that 1) works and 2) you will enjoy in the process. No more beating yourself up and spiraling the shame drain thinking you have to do more and be more. We embrace a philosophy that it doesn’t have to hurt to work. The extremes aren’t sustainable. Be kind to yourself. Be kind to your body. Slow, steady and sane wins the race of life. And we are here to help you along the way.

Hi! I’m Erin and my passion in life is helping others feel better by helping them get out of their own head. So much of our relationship to food and fitness is a reflection of deeply rooted beliefs that were imprinted on us at a very early age. These beliefs drive all sorts of behaviors, many of which are not good for our physical or mental health. I know this first-hand. As a former calorie-counting cardio queen I played right into all the toxic messages about what it meant to be “healthy”. That all changed when I hit rock bottom. Since leaving my corporate career in 2009 I have been fully committed to shifting the narrative and helping people experience better physical health by unpacking unhealthy beliefs. My biggest inspiration are my two young daughters, who I hope to raise in a household that openly illuminates and addresses the misinformation instead of adopting it.
